Ryan Brenizer Workshop

I cannot honestly remember how I discovered the uber talented Ryan Brenizer, though I suspect it was through Flickr.  I happen to have been a Flickr member since they started and it used to be that was the way I discovered all my favorite photographers. The “Explore” feature of Flickr is just so terrific!  But I digress…

However it was that I discovered Ryan, I am so glad I did.  Of all the living photographers I admire, Ryan has had perhaps the biggest influence on me.  I don’t directly apply every single thing I learn from Ryan or his work to my own way of shooting.  But I am always influenced positively by his techniques, portfolio of work, and by his attitude towards the “job” of photography.  He’s a terrific gem of a photographer in this industry that can have some wild cards.  So it was with rather obnoxious giddiness that I flew to NYC last week & became a student in my first ever Ryan Brenizer workshop.  I was finally able to meet Ryan, I also met the lovely & talented Rochelle Bilow (one of our models – an amazing writer) and a host of other amazing photographers.  Our other models; Kindiya and Thomas, Isla (Ryan’s intern) and Dan were wonderful as well.  It was such a terrific group of people!  I was so inspired to try new things and to better my technique as a photographer.  Such a rewarding experience!!  I cannot wait to apply the things I learned in my 2010 wedding season and during my travel assignments!

Photographers – Ryan went over the Brenizer Method and spent a great amount of time on lighting.  Whether you do weddings, portraits, commercial or editorial work…I think every photographer could benefit from the knowledge that Ryan has to share.  Keep up with his blog for news on when the next workshop will be!  Also, check out Ryan’s own recap of the day as well as Daniel Stark’s for even more information and images from the workshop.

Happenings

This time of year in Ohio, I normally hibernate, not leaving the house unless it is absolutely necessary.  Yes, I grew up in Vermont and shouldn’t be fazed by winter.  But I can’t help it – I am.  As an adult, I don’t find the joy in winter that I did as an innocent 5 year old.  Now the snow outside my window signals 5 hours of shoveling instead of 5 hours of igloo building and cross country skiing.  And the thought most prevalent in my mind is – how soon can I escape to Mexico?

BUT…today, the sun was shining.  And the snow seemed like it was starting to melt.  And I decided to buy daisies.  Daffoldils and daisies are happy flowers in my opinion.  I cannot look at a bouquet of either flower and not feel cheered.  And since that trip to Mexico can’t take place tomorrow – a small vase of daisies will have to do for now!

Other, more pertinent happenings in the world of Kirsten Alana Photography:

* It is album design time and many clients have currently submitted orders for leather art albums, coffee table albums or custom guest books!  It’s keeping me uber busy.  Want to get in on the action?  Email me today and lets get started!  As soon as I receive some of the albums I’ve been designing…I’ll be posting pictures here.
* My favorite west coast print lab featured some of my images in their booth at WPPI which is the go-to event on the west side of our great country for professional wedding photographers everywhere!!  It’s a pretty fun little honor and it definitely made my day.  Who was featured?  These two cute kids!
* Just ordered my framed print submission for the annual Art Dash Hospice Benefit Auction.  I’ve been contributing to this for years and it’s one of my favorite charities to support as well as a great event every year.  Bonus: my mum donates too so it’s one of the things we look forward to being a part of together.  We always meet at the artist’s reception that precedes the event & gape in awe at the amazing works donated to the event.
* I’m headed to NYC twice this Spring for photography seminars.  Training, inspiration, fresh thinking and lots of motivation will be had I hope, and my goal is to come back a better photographer and a better person.  BONUS: this will be my first time in the “Big Apple”.  Can’t wait to see if the city that never sleeps lives up to all the hype!

…ok, back to album designing.  Cheers!!
